The Shawnee tribe is an Algonquian speaking group indigenous to North America. In the pre-colonial times, they were a semi-migratory nation mainly occupying places of Ohio Valley and extended to other parts. History professionals have argued that the Ohio Valley is not the only area that the Shawnee inhabited and there are some such as Texas, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Kansas. Oklahoma and Missouri were the territories that have a significant number of the Shawnee tribe, and that was so because of the competition of natural resources in the places they were in originally. Competition for natural resources was not the only issue that was facing the Shawnee tribe but there were conflicts as well that led to their search for other new areas. The population of Shawnee tribe was high, but it later decreased due to different reasons. The settlers oppressed the natives, and it is because of that that chaos erupted and in the course of the battles that some lives were lost. Ailments like flu, smallpox, and fever also greatly led to the reduction in the population of Shawnee tribe.
Piqua Shawnee is one of the groupings that encompass the larger Shawnee tribe. The extra tribes that make up the Shawnee tribe are Kispoko, Chillicothe, Hathawekela, and Mequachake. The name Piqua was derived from a man who is believed to have existed and he led a group in agreement with an extreme spirit. The man showed to the grouping in the form of a cloud rising from the coals of the fire. The way of life of the Shawnee has been upheld for a long time.
There was the distribution of labor between the males and females. The Shawnee also practiced farming, and that was mainly done by women. The roles of the ladies was to cook, farm and fend for families. For each celebration that happened, it was directly affected by the agricultural sequence. Because migration to various places was a norm to the Shawnee tribe, they got to establish other new contacts with people they found in those areas. They in some instances traded with these tribes.
The territory that was inhabited after the civil war was Oklahoma. The Piqua Shawnee symbolizes a small number of families that are interconnected and preserve the Shawnee heritage. The Shawnee are scattered in various parts. There are countries like Kentucky and Alabama that have authoritatively embraced the Shawnee tribe as theirs. The Shawnee tribe is ruled by a tribal council that is composed of the principal chief, clan elders, clan women, and men. The tribe is creative, and they make items like pots, wood carvings, and beads. Apart from the wampum beads being used as a means to trade, they were important in their culture and heritage.
